I am an author (novelist, researcher, etc.); how can I get historical information about a specific case or battle?
JPAC often receives public requests for 'all that we have' about a particular case or cases. JPAC cannot give out information regarding the status or progress of open and unresolved cases. Our organization is very careful about guarding the privacy of the families of all unaccounted-for service members; and that means not providing information to the public regarding any open cases.
This is Department of Defense policy. Only when a case has been resolved and the family has approved release of information can we give out details of a case. If they choose, families are given updates on the status of their cases; they may come to regularly-scheduled family update conferences held around the country to sit down with JPAC personnel and representatives of their service to review their cases in detail.
However, there are some families that choose not to closely follow the progress of their cases. These families should not hear from a third party or public sources sensitive information regarding the status of their loved one. There are also legal, scientific, and privacy act requirements that we must follow that precludes us from releasing much of the information we have on a given open case. However, the historical information that we have gathered in support of a case may be requested via the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
The address to file a FOIA request is:
Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command
ATTN: External Relations - FOIA REQUEST
310 Worchester Avenue
Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, HI 96853-5530
Requests should be as specific as possible. If you know them, include the dates, titles, authors and addresses for documents and letters you are seeking.
If you are seeking information about a missing family member, you may contact the service casualty office for the branch of service of your missing loved one.
I am a reporter (journalist) and am interested about the progress of a specific case. Can I get updates for my story?
JPAC does not discuss the specific progress of an unresolved case out of respect of the families’ privacy. We do not wish for those with missing loved-ones to read or see information about their case from the media or other third party sources. Once a family has been notified that their family member has been identified by the Central Identification Laboratory AND they grant permission for the Department of Defense to discuss their case with outside parties, JPAC can discuss the specific aspects of the case.
I am interested in creating a dramatic series (movie). Who should I contact?
JPAC does not provide support for dramatic (fictional) productions about our organization.
I am a documentary producer and would like to do a feature on JPAC. Is this possible?
Yes; JPAC has worked with many documentary producers for movies and television episodes. Support for these projects comes on a first come-first serve basis due to JPAC Public Affairs limited staff and budget. The Public
Affairs Office also requires producers obtain a written film agreement before we explore supporting your request. This gives JPAC assurance that the support given will result in a significant public distribution among various national and international outlets.
I am writing a story about a case in Vietnam (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand) and would like to interview somebody at one of the JPAC Detachments. Should I just contact them directly?
No. Approval for all interviews and media queries come from the JPAC Public Affairs Office at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Please contact our office and we will facilitate any interviews or responses to queries.
